A Day in Dublin

We took a panoramic driving tour of Dublin this morning. We stopped at Merrion Square to view this unusual sculpture of Oscar Wilde. It was right across the street from his childhood home.

Ricky in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Christ Church Cathedral, the oldest church in Dublin. It dates back to medieval times.
We did a brief walking tour of Trinity College, led by a recent graduate. Then we visited the Book of Kells, the Book of Dimma, and the Book of Mulling. All three are believed to have been written in the 9th century. Too bad the didn't allow any photos.
This is the long room, the old library at Trinity College. There are some really ancient books here. Interestingly, the books are arranged by size, largest books at the bottom. According to the guide, it might take weeks, months, or years to find a particular book, since they aren't shelved by topic or writer.
This harp is housed in the long room. It is believed to be the oldest harp in Ireland, dating from the 15th century.
We took a short walk to the National Museum to see the bodies recovered from peat bogs. This one was from 400 b.c. Gruesome, but interesting nonetheless.
Ricky hung out at the pub while I did some shopping. I had the necessary Guinness here.
We ended the day with a dinner cruise on a barge on the Grand Canal. It moved at a snail's pace, retracing the path of the Ghinness barges, once pulled by horses on the same route.
